11/10/23 @ House of Blues - BY KSENIYA US
On the intimate stage of the Voodoo Room in San Diego’s House of Blues stood a microphone stand adorned with flowers and a flowing scarf. Local up-and-coming R&B superstar Kahlil Nash took the stage with his guitar, joined by Hank Nelson on bass guitar, Trevy James on keys, and Kendall Jackson on drums.
Kicking off the show with a track off his 2020 EP, Transcendence, Kahlil took the packed room to “Saturn’s Rings.” Self-described as a “spacey, futuristic R&B track,” the song took on a new life with its dance-worthy beat. The band jammed while Kahlil let the guitar sing, not unlike one of his key influences, Prince.
The set moved on to a more sensual direction with the R&B love song “Take Care” off his EP, Imagine. Each member of the band flawlessly translated the multi-layered track to the live stage, making every moment exciting to listen to.
The band segued into “Ultra Violet Drive Thru,” without a doubt one of Kahlil’s most impressive tracks yet. The slow jamming, hip swaying song was the perfect choice to set the mood for the rest of the night to come.
