11/15/23 @ THE MAGNOLIA - BY KSENIYA US

If somebody were to tell you jazz is dead, Laufey could prove them wrong in a heartbeat. As the band began to fill The Magnolia’s stage, over 1,000 screaming fans erupted to greet the Icelandic singer-songwriter. Armed with a red Gibson and enchanting voice, Laufey and her band serenaded the crowd first with “Fragile.”

Without skipping a beat, the Laufey played right into “Second Best.” Sharing a piece of heartbreak that was nonetheless beautiful in every way. While she sang about not being someone’s first choice, it was obvious in the room that she was everyone’s first choice that night.

The bossa nova track was a perfect start to the show, with each band member adding to the beautiful layers. The audience was in awe and sang along only when their lovelorn hero sang, “I've never been so fragile.”

Taking a moment to connect with her fans, Laufey relayed the news of her well-needed day off in San Diego and reminisced with the audience before breaking into “Valentine.” This time the fans couldn’t help but sing along to every word, a chorus of followers behind their beloved hero. This song could no doubt harken back to Ella Fitzgerald or Doris Day.
